As we observe Mental Health Week, we take this opportunity to reflect on the importance of mental well-being in our lives and communities. Mental health is an integral part of our overall health, yet it often does not receive the attention it deserves. This week serves as a reminder to prioritize mental health, break the stigma surrounding mental illness, and foster open conversations.
The goal of October 10th’s World Mental Health Day celebration is to raise public awareness of the importance of making mental health concerns a global priority. Additionally, efforts are made to draw funding to enhance the care of mental health issues. As Ekupholeni Mental Health and Trauma Centre, we recognize the challenges many faces in navigat ing their mental health, especially in today’s fast-paced world. Our commitment is to create an environmentwhere everyone feels safe to seek help and support. We encourage our community to engage in activities that promote mental wellness, whether through mindfulness practices, community support, or professional help.
Ekupholeni rises to Prioritise Mental Health in the Workplace in line with the declaration of the World Health Organisation and the United Nations. Mental health issues in the workplace in South Africa are prevalent, with 30% of employees reporting anxiety and depression. These issues can lead to productivity loss, stigma, and limited access to services. 40% of employees experience work-related stress, and 60% feel their mental health worsened during the COVID 19 pandemic. The Occupational Health and Safety Act mandates employers to ensure a safe working environment, including mental health considerations. The COVID-19 pandemic has 2 further exacerbated mental health issues. As Ekupholeni, we take it upon ourselves to pause and reflect on the state of our employees as far as their wellness is concerned, in view of the conditions they are working and interacting with. We encourage our employees and community volunteers that When you don’t feel good – Remember PEACE (Pause, Exhale, Accept, Choose and Explore) as a method to debrief when the tide gets tough.
Together, let us stand in solidarity, support one another, and advocate for better mental health resources and awareness. By prioritizing mental health, we can build a more resilient and compassionate society.
“It is Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace.”
Warm Regards
